BIO: Maria Eugenia Hernández Ruiz

Maria Eugenia Hernández Ruiz, PT, MSc

Maria Eugenia Hernández Ruiz studied in Mexico at the University UVM where she became a licensed physiotherapist. Following her internship at the hospital IMSSS, she moved to Spain to do a postgrad and the specialization in Aquatic Therapy. During that time, she was an in charge of a pediatric rehabilitation in a private clinic. She became a professor in the university UAQ in Mexico and was in charge of the pool area in the university clinic.
Maria is the founding president of Mexican Aquatic Therapy Association. She is also a member of the International Aquatic Therapy Faculty (IATF), and assists with classes and organization. Maria has been translating for over 8 years in aquatic therapy courses.
Maria was the organizing co-chair for the International Conference on Evidence-Based Aquatic Therapy (ICEBAT- US 2018), and the organizing chair for the International Aquatic Congress (ICEBAT in Mexico 2016). For the past several years she has been educated by Johan Lambeck, and hopes to become a Lecture in the IATF soon…!

Ryan Greene is the Texas Campus Director for Aquatic Therapy University as well as the founder or Pisces Aquatic Services. He has been providing Aquatic Therapy in the Houston area for nearly 10 years, since 2007 and has played a major role in bringing aquatic therapy continuing education seminars more frequently to Texas since 2014. Ryan graduated from Southern University in 2004 with a Bachelors degree and became a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. After moving to Texas from Louisiana, he has been providing home and community based therapy services for individuals with disabilities ranging from Cerebral Palsy, Spina Bifida, Autism, and a number of other disabling conditions. Ryan currently serves as a leading Recreational & Aquatic Therapist for Scoggins Therapies.

Ryan has experience with working in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings. His impact was so significant that on the last day as an intern at the outpatient facility called Synergy, dozens of psychiatric individuals started and signed a petition for him to be hired or they would stop attending. Needless to say, the administrator provided him with employment papers by the end of that day.

Ryan helped a new inpatient psychiatric facility in Bogalusa, Louisiana called Magnolia Behavioral Healthcare by serving as a Recreational Therapist,  developed the daily multidisciplinary schedule for patients and also served as the Nonviolent Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) Instructor, ensuring that all staff were properly trained.

Ryan whole-heartedly enjoys providing continuing education opportunities to fellow allied health therapists. He also loves the water and is a Pisces, therefore is the reason he founded Pisces Aquatic Services. In 2017, Ryan joined forces with Inertia Therapy Services to host the 2018 Halliwick Aquatic Therapy/Water Specific Therapy certification course in Houston, Texas. This certification course only comes to the U.S. once every two years, and has not been in Houston in 10 years.

BIO: Urs Gamper

Urs Gamper

Urs Gamper is a Physical Therapist and Senior Lecturer of the Association of International Aquatic Therapy Faculty (IATF). He is the head of the Therapy Department at the internationally known Kliniken Valens, Switzerland. Urs has some 35 years of experience in  Aquatic Therapy for adult patients with neurological, orthopaedic or  rheumatologic diseases.  He is an author of various books, book chapters and (peer reviewed) articles. Urs has a wide international teaching experience.

Christopher J. Sawyer has been passionate about water since he was on the swim team at the age of six and in the aquatics business since he was of working age. He started out as a lifeguard at the YMCA, then a swimming instructor, next a pool technician, and finally, a swimming pool manager. He pursued his International Business Degree with the intention of starting his own swimming pool maintenance business, however on graduation in 2011, he decided to accept a position at the National Swimming Pool Foundation providing support and solving swimming pool problems from pool operators nationwide. He was certified as an AEA Aquatic Fitness Professional in 2013. He taught popular Aqua Cardio and Aqua Pilates classes at Villa Sport, one of Colorado’s largest indoor waterpark and swimming facilities. In 2015 he acted as director of SunWater Spa’s Aquatic Wellness program leading a successful AquaStretch practice. His unique understanding of hands-on aquatics and scientific water chemistry knowledge brought him to the National Recreation and Park Association in 2015 to become an instructor of the Aquatic Facility Operator course. The AFO course provides a comprehensive understanding of how to maintain a healthy swimming environment. His perspective is of someone who has spent eight hours a day in the water for many years. He will teach you how to identify and maintain healthy water for your aquatic practice. This type of knowledge is invaluable to those who practice regularly in the aquatic arts.

I thought these cards were aesthetically intriguing. Their transparent style allows you to see through the card frame…yet even against direct sunlight, you cannot see what card is on the other side!

Inertia’s Analysis:
In all honesty, training body mechanics with lifting tech and core stabilization is almost second nature with the resistance tray/kickboard combo. I tend to prefer the bigger blue kickboards for the size and resistance, but many of my older and smaller clients have a hard time with the buoyancy, so the team kickboards work best for them. And of course, they both work fine for swimming.
